Days off, still exhausted?

WEEKLY TOOLS FOR FIRST RESPONDERS

Hi Mate,

Great to have you here.

This weekly email is for firefighters, police, paramedics, first responders, and the people who support them at home. Each week I share a simple tool or idea that can help with the realities of the job. Nothing complicated. Just practical things that fit around shift work, unpredictable calls, and the kind of pressure most people never see.

TL;DR (What this email is about)

If you’ve ever had a full day off but still felt tired, flat, or not properly recharged, this week explains why that happens and gives you a simple way to get more out of your time off.

This week’s idea

You finally get a day off.

No calls outs. No jobs. Nothing urgent.

But by the end of the day, you don’t feel as rested as you expected.

Sometimes you feel flat. Sometimes restless. Sometimes like you have just lost a day.

That can be frustrating.

You look forward to time off, but it does not always feel like recovery.

The reason is simple. Time off is not the same as switching off. Your body might be out of the job, but your system can still be running in the background.

Still alert. Still scanning. Still slightly “on.”

One tool to try this week

This is not about doing more on your days off. It is about creating one clear moment where your system can shift gears.

The deliberate reset

Pick one simple activity at the start of your day off. Something low pressure and predictable.

For example:

• A short walk

• Sitting outside with a coffee

• A slow breakfast without your phone

While you are doing it, keep your attention on that one thing. You are not trying to relax perfectly.

You are giving your system a clear signal that today is different.

Why this matters

Without a clear shift, your system can carry work mode into your time off.

That is why rest can feel incomplete.

Recovery is not just about stopping work. It is about changing state.

Even one deliberate reset can help your body recognise that it is safe to slow down.

That’s it for this week.

Do your days off usually leave you feeling recharged, or still a bit flat?

Hit reply and let me know. I read every message.

Take care out there,

Rick Moore
